Texas Instruments/DELCO automobile transistor radio, 1957. The invention of the transistor at Bell Labs in 1947 gave engineers a powerful new tool that they quickly adopted for new radio circuits. Portable radios based on vacuum tubes existed prior to the transistor but transistorized designs proved more durable and much more energy efficient. Transistor radios first went on sale in late 1954 and by the early 1960s many Americans owned one. Car radios also became more reliable as transistors were integrated into the design.
